The 33-year-old from Gosport was arrested earlier today on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drugs and alcohol, and failing to stop after a collision.

It follows police hunting for the driver of a white Volkswagen Crafter van after a crash with two cyclists on the Newgate Lane flyover in Fareham at 7.28pm yesterday.

Acting Sergeant Robin Tompkins said: ‘I have been to countless serious injury collision but last night’s incident has to be one of the worst I have seen in many years.

‘Due to the nature of the incident we are also concerned for the welfare of any witnesses, who may wish to seek support from our partner agencies.

‘I wish to thank the public for their patience and understanding last night as Newgate Lane was closed for a number of hours to allow us to gather forensic evidence at the scene.’

No witnesses are believed to have been injured during the incident, but officers understand how upsetting it can be to witness a collision and wish to extend appropriate support, according to a spokeswoman from Hampshire Constabulary.

She added: ‘The boys received very serious injuries, although we have no further update at this time, and this is why the officer found it to be one of the worst.

‘Attending road traffic collisions can be very difficult, especially with such young cyclists.’

The 33-year-old man remains in custody at this time.
