Cyclists warned as police confirm more equipment checks in Portsmouth

It comes after a one-day operation in Fratton last week saw 25 penalty notices given out to cyclists who were not using adequate lighting.

Over the course of three days, further operations in Basingstoke and Totton saw 480 cyclists stopped and given advice, 34 given penalty notices and 201 temporary lights given out.

A Hampshire Police spokesman confirmed more work will be planned in November in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, but could not disclose where or when this would be carried out.

He added that during the checks last week officers also gave out fluorescent neck tubes and ruck sack covers and a new cycle safety booklet.

Cyclists can be fined £50 if they are found riding at night without lights on their bikes.

But if a person goes to a police-approved cycle shop, buys a new set of lights, gets their penalty ticket stamped and sent back to police within 28 days, they will not be prosecuted.
