The same road has seen a pair of sheep killed in a hit and run incident earlier in the week, and three donkeys died after being hit by a van just three weeks ago.

Police are still investigating the cause of the incident and are urging drivers to reduce their speed when driving through the New Forest National Park, where cattle, donkeys, and horses roam freely.

A Hampshire Constabulary social media account said: ‘Animals are on the Forest roads licking the salt that has been freshly laid.

‘Please take extreme care to avoid any further incidents.’

In 2019, 58 animals were killed and 32 were injured, according to the New Forest National Park Authority.
