Fresh warning as tax scammers strike again

A WARNING has been issued after fraudsters targeted victims over fake tax bills.

Hampshire police warned yesterday that eight more people were called by people pretending to be workers from HMRC demanding cash and threatening victims with arrest if nothing is paid.

Eight people were called on Wednesday, police said.

It comes after 15 people – two from Fareham – were targeted on June 7.

A police spokesman said: ‘On each occasion the victim received a telephone call from a person claiming to be from HMRC (Revenue and Customs).

‘They were told that they will be arrested if they did not settle their unpaid tax bill.

‘Fortunately the victims knew this was a scam and refused to hand over any money.’

Police advised people to refuse to hand over any cash and to call Action Fraud.
