A week after the attack in Shearer Road, Buckland, police were patrolling the area and handing out appeal fliers.

Officers were also in Commercial Road and Edinburgh Road, Landport, yesterday after a man police want to speak to was spotted on CCTV two days before the incident.

The 17-year-old victim remains in hospital and is in a serious but stable condition.

Police were called just before 7pm last Monday to a report she had been attacked.

Hampshire police said she was attacked with a weapon, probably a hammer, leaving her with a serious head injury.

The CCTV images have been sent to the big screen operators in Guildhall Square to broadcast in a bid to track down the man, a spokeswoman said.

She added officers from across the county in the major crime team had been drafted in to run the investigation.
