Man bailed in poppy wreaths inquiry

A 29-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage to poppy wreaths at a Hampshire war memorial has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

A video was shared on social media of a man throwing Remembrance Day poppy wreaths from the Cenotaph in Watts Park, Southampton.

A Hampshire Police spokeswoman said: ‘A 29-year-old man arrested following an incident in Watts Park, Southampton, has now been detained under section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983. He has also been bailed until January 19 while investigations continue.’

Georgie Smith, who posted a video on Facebook, wrote: “Was walking through the park this afternoon and saw this man trashing the memorial in the park. Not sure who his is but it’s disgusting and I hope he gets caught.”
