IT is absolutely right that officers who have been killed on duty should be posthumously honoured with a medal of honour, according to Hampshire Police Federation.

A campaign for a new medal for fallen officers, called the Elizabeth Medal, has been launched by Bryn Hughes and Paul Bone – fathers of GMP officers PC Nicola Hughes and PC Fiona Bone, who were killed on duty after they attended a call-out to a hoax burglary.

And Hampshire Police Federation is putting its full support behind the Medals for Heroes campaign. Chair ZoeWakefield said: ‘I’ve had the honour of having several chats with Bryn Hughes about this and he’s an amazing man who’s making a real difference for, not just Nicola and Fiona, but for so many other officers. [Thames Valley Police officer] Andrew Harper, for one, who’s obviously local to us.

‘It’s amazing we haven’t had it before, because the military have all sorts of medals. We’ve never had this. So we are fully supportive.’
