Police warn Hampshire residents of new Facebook scam

CONMEN are targeting Hampshire residents with a new scam on Facebook, police are warning.

Hampshire Constabulary has received reports from a number of victims who have been unable to log into their Facebook accounts.

Victims have received emails urging them to call or text a number to speak to an advisor, who asks them to download an app so they can take control of people’s computers remotely,

Police are now warning people not to do this.

A spokesman said: ‘Once the advisor has control of the victim’s computer they are able to upload viruses and enter accounts without the victim realising.

‘This scam has been reported around other parts of the UK and police would like to advise residents not to open emails they do not recognise.’

The scam was reported in Andover, but police are warning residents across the county to be aware. Those who have been targeted by online fraudsters can report it at actionfraud.police.uk
