On November 24 last year police were called to a domestic incident in Copnor during which Jesse Madgwick, 22, attacked officers with a metal bar, biting one officer and causing a female officer to suffer ‘swelling and redness to her face’.

In another incident in February this year, Madgwick, who lives in Copnor, pushed one officer to the floor and kicked another in the stomach after police were again called to deal with a domestic argument in London Road.

Madgwick was already on the police’s radar after officers found a ‘large amount of cash, a large quantity of class A drugs and numerous phones’ after he was stopped and searched on Sunday, September 30, 2018.

At Portsmouth Crown Court, Madgwick admitted three counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker, one count of obstruction/resisting a constable, two counts of being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug, one count of being concerned in making an offer to supply a Class A drug, one count of supplying a Class B drug and two counts of possessing criminal property.

The combination of offences resulted in Madgwick being sentenced to two years and two months in prison.

Detective Constable Graham Skull said: ‘We take a zero-tolerance approach to assaults on our officers and do not accept that it is simply part of the job.

‘No emergency worker should turn up to work and expect to come to harm. As a force we will continue to work with the CPS to ensure that those responsible for these awful attacks are brought to justice.’
