Project helped female abuse victims gets £226k boost

A GROUP tackling female genital mutilation (FGM) in Portsmouth is to be expanded after receiving a £226,480 government grant.

The windfall has been presented to Harmful Cultural Practices – South East Hampshire and will allow the support scheme to expand from its base in Portsmouth to cover the whole county.

Home secretary Amber Rudd revealed the cash as part of a £17m fund yesterday which is being pumped into 41 projects across the UK seeking to end violence against women.

It comes just days after fresh figures from child protection charity NSPCC revealed 15 newly-recorded cases of FGM in the city between April 2016 and March this year.

Ms Rudd said a more ‘joined-up’ effort was needed to combat the problem nationally.

She added: ‘Tackling violence against women and girls is everyone’s business.’
