British Transport Police has launched an investigation after the lamp case – believed to be an external spotlight – was launched onto the railway line on Sunday, June 7 near St Deny’s Station, just outside Southampton.
Just after 5.30pm, it was hit by a train, causing damage to the train’s shoegear which supplies power to the train, but could have caused a much more serious incident.
