Youth offending court pilot draws to a close

A PILOT aimed at tackling youth offending has dealt with 170 children.

Hampshire Community Court – which puts youngsters face to face with their victims – has run for 20 months.

Now as the pilot is set to end PC Mark Walsh has spoken of his pride in the scheme.

He said: ‘In 20 months of operation, using restorative principles as their guide and their experience of life as young people today, our volunteers have supported and held to account 170 children.

‘Their aims have been simple. Where their peers’ behaviour has caused hurt, they have delivered a justice outcome which educates them about the hurt caused and the consequences of future actions.

‘They have provided an opportunity for their peers to make amends for what they have done in a way that is proportionate.’
