BUSINESSES across Waterlooville have been smashed up by youths as police crank up patrols.

Police have received numerous reports of vandalism in the town centre over the past two months. A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokeswoman said teenagers have been ‘accessing roofs and causing damage’.

She added: ‘We have received reports that damage has been caused to air conditioning units, windows and roofs of businesses in the town centre. Staff have also reported verbal abuse and harassment.’

Police are trying to identify and disrupt those responsible, and are encouraging the public to continually report incidents. Waterlooville North Police Sergeant Matthew Painter said: ‘We fully appreciate the impact that this type of crime has on our local businesses and residents who use the town centre.

‘Everyone should be able to go about their day-to-day life without having to encounter this type of behaviour. I would like to reassure local residents that we are doing everything we can to tackle this issue.’

Sgt Painter said officers conducted a ‘dedicated day of action’. During patrols, 15 people – aged between 12 and 19 – believed to be involved in anti-social behaviour were stopped and questioned by officers.

Parents of those aged under 17 were sent cease and desist letters. One 17-year-old boy was issued a community resolution.

Sgt Painter said patrols in affected areas have been increased. ‘We will continue these patrols, both uniformed and plain clothes, in order to disrupt and deter those causing the issues,’ he added.

Police are speaking with Havant Borough Council, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and shop owners to implement preventative measures.
