Defence minister insists UK's £178bn Strategic Defence and Security Review '˜will boost the Royal Navy'

THE Royal Navy's effectiveness will be improved thanks to the government's Strategic Defence and Security Review, a defence minister has claimed.

The comments come after concerns were raised the £178bn plan would not address the Royal Navy’s ongoing manpower and equipment shortages.

However, defence procurement minister Philip Dunne said the review would help ‘deliver the most modern navy in the world’.

He stressed that manpower would grow with the new carriers on the horizon and a fleet of at least 19 frigates and destroyers.
