DIANA WREN: Choir will perform moving Remembrance piece

Written by Adrian Bawtree, formerly the musical director of St Mary’s Church, Portsea, it was performed by the choir in 2014 for the anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. Since then, the composer has re-written and extended the piece.

Remembrance recalls public attitudes of the time.

The first movement begins with a slow march and is about the general mobilisation of troops.

The second is about sunset, roll call and reflections on the eve of battle.

The third considers what was known during the war as the loss of innocence.

The fourth movement is about poppies and remembering the fallen.

This very moving work is being paired with a much more joyful piece, Benjamin Britten’s Saint Nicolas.

It tells the story in music of the life and exploits of Saint Nicolas, also popularly known as Santa Claus.

As the programme also includes two short and tuneful works by Holst, it should prove a very interesting evening of music.

The concert, on November 26, starts at 7.30pm.
