Fareham sailors join tribute to Lord Admiral Nelson

TRIBUTES will be paid to the Royal Navy's greatest hero on Friday.

The Nelson Society will hold a commemorative service at the Nelson Monument, on Portsdown Hill to mark the 211th anniversary of the laying of its foundations.

Sailors from Fareham’s HMS Collingwood will join the ceremony, which is part of the nationwide Trafalgar Day. Commander David Johnston, Collingwood’s executive officer, will be laying a wreath.

The day marks the navy’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and the sacrifice of Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson.

The monument was erected by Lord Nelson’s ‘companions in arms’ following the battle and has served as a seamark to bring vessels safely back into Portsmouth Harbour. The event begins at 10.30am.
