Fareham teens have some fun doing the conga through town centre for good cause

The 12 fundraisers set off on their sponsored dance from Fareham College before making their way down the main road and into the town centre.

It was all part of the effort to support The Kids Family Centre, at Salterns Lane.

The group, aged 15 to 17, have been working as part of the government-backed National Citizen Service scheme to help charities and organisations.

Group co-ordinator Hannah Munden, 16, of Horndean, said: ‘Doing the conga was hilarious, we had cars beeping us and we cheered and sang the whole time.

‘We were looking to see if people recognised us and it was all about raising awareness for the charity.’

The participants have clubbed together to carry out other community tasks, including helping to transform the garden of the centre, which helps disabled children. They repainted the garden fence a rainbow colour and planted plants to create a sensory patch.

Hannah said: ‘It’s been so enjoyable, particularly looking at it from the charity side of things as I feel great that we’ve helped to make a difference.

‘I had been really looking forward to it as I loved the idea of raising funds to help other people out.’

The group, run by Personal Best Education at Fareham College, first got together at Croyde Bay in North Devon where they carried out surfing workshops. The following week they headed to Salisbury where they worked with the Army before planning out their work at Kids. They are looking to raise £200 for the centre.

Hannah added: ‘I would definitely recommend that other young people like myself get involved in the scheme. It is so rewarding.’

Zoe Watkinson, 16, from Waterlooville, said: ‘I thought I would give it a go after hearing about it through school.

‘It’s been a lot of good fun and I’ve made a lot of friends so I would definitely recommend it. Everybody my age should do it as it is all for a good cause.’

Joanne Poole, nursery co-ordinator at the Kids Centre added: ‘I think it’s brilliant that there are schemes out there like this.’
