Fire service workers get awards for equality

A DOG handler and volunteer have been given awards for promoting equality.

Search dog handler Jim Gilbert and Lee Joss, a volunteer co-ordinator, were given silver gongs at the Women in the Fire Service awards.

Both work at Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Jim has been a long-time supporter of WFS and teaches delegates about the role of the urban search and rescue team.

A fire service spokesman said: ‘Sessions run by Jim with his dogs are always oversubscribed and Jim participates fully in the weekend events. He is always smiling, friendly and helpful, and willing to go the extra mile to facilitate any delegate requests.’

Lee became a rep for WFS in 2009 and has supported training events. The spokesman added: ‘She has worked hard to ensure women are encouraged and supported in attending the events; and was a key driver in organising the coaching course in HFRS.’
