Get messy and learn about the Bible

Rev Kate Macfarlane, Anglican Minister at Hart Plain Church, Waterlooville, wants families to get involved with Messy Church

Have you heard about Messy Church yet?

If you like getting messy with glue and paint, and if you like fun and games, and if you like music and story-telling, and if you want to know more about what the Bible says, then Messy Church is for you!

Messy Church began in 2004 at St Wilfrid’s in Cowplain when the church realised that they were not attracting local families on a Sunday morning and that a new way of doing church was needed.

The aim was to provide a space where people of all ages could worship together and have fun.

At Hart Plain Church we are holding our first Messy Church on Wednesday, February 3 from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and we’ll be looking at how Jesus met his first disciples who were fishermen.

The afternoon will start with drinks and biscuits and colouring activities followed by a retelling of the Bible story using props.

And then we will spend about an hour doing craft activities including decorating fish, making a magnetic fishing game, junk modelling and making apple boats.

A short celebration is held in the church with songs, a prayer activity and a chance to explore the story some more.

Then we’ll share a delicious cooked meal together – fish fingers, of course!

Messy Church is ideal for families as it offers time for learning, playing and worshipping together and a chance to share a meal as a family without the cooking or washing up!

Over the past 12 years, Messy Church has spread across the country and around the world.

There are now more than 3,000 Messy Churches in 18 countries and it’s still growing.

If you haven’t tried it yet, why not join us next month? There is no charge and you will find a warm welcome for all the family.
