‘The car seems to have caved in almost the entire front side of the building – where it’s all made of glass it looks really bad.

‘There are three police cars outside the library too.’

The condition of the driver is currently unknown.

Councillor Sean Woodward, executive member of recreation and heritage for Hampshire County Council, said: ‘Following an incident at Bridgemary Library earlier this evening, I would like to thank members of our Property and Libraries teams who made their way to the building as soon as they were alerted to ensure no-one was hurt and to assist police at the scene.

‘Unfortunately due to the damage to the building, our library will be closed at least for tomorrow.

‘The building is now secure, and we will be working as quickly as we can to repair the damage and re-open for business.’
