Lecture on history of comics and art

THE little-known history of the comic book genre and its association with 1960s pop artists will be revealed at the University of Chichester next week.

Professor Hugo Frey, a world-renowned expert on the graphic novel, will be speaking on comic culture at an open lecture on Wednesday February 6.

The talk, which starts at 6pm, is free for the public as well as University students and staff but tickets should be booked at inaugural-lecture-hugo-frey.eventbrite.co.uk

Professor Frey said: “I will take you from Paris to New York and back again – via Brussels and Antwerp – on a journey into some previously hidden aspects of the history of comics and mid-1960s pop art.

“The world of French new-wave cinema will form a chapter of the story.”

The talk, Comics culture and Roy Lichtenstein revisited: analysing a forgotten feedback loop, is being hosted in the University’s Mitre lecture theatre on its Bishop Otter campus, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 6PE.

Professor Frey is the director of the University’s Institute of Arts and Humanities and has published extensively on the graphic novel as well as the history of French cinema, taking a particular focus on renowned producer Louis Malle.

Recently he worked with the British Museum on their ground-breaking exhibition Power of Manga which opens this summer.
