Paulsgrove Baptist Church hosted the event on Saturday and hundreds of people went along.

As well as a children’s entertainer providing live music, visitors also enjoyed a barbecue, face painting, crafts and outdoor games.

The church also had stalls selling home-made crafts and members of the congregation shaved their hair.

Julie Ballard, from Paulsgrove, went along with her three children Dylan Cross, 10, Sophia Cross, seven, and Oliver Cross, six.

She said: ‘The day has been really good. We have enjoyed ourselves.

‘It is a good way for the church to raise the money it needs and a lot of people have come down.

‘We use the church facilities quite often so it is good to support them and their bid for a new roof.’

The church needs £70,000 for the roof and the fun day was just one way they have been raising the cash.

Other events involve sponsored walks and bike rides and people in the area filling money boxes with change and handing them to the church.

Maurica Benford, who is on the committee for the new roof, said: ‘Lots of people came to the event – in the first hour we had about 170 people through the doors. It was great to see and families seemed to be enjoying themselves.

‘A lot of the companies who provided activities gave their time for free so all proceeds can go to the church’s roof.’

She added: ‘The fundraising for the new roof is going really well and people have been so generous.

‘There is a real sense of community around Paulsgrove.’
