Black Lives Matter movement to hold Portsmouth vigil following shootings in Nigeria

THE city’s Black Lives Matter movement is hosting a vigil this evening (October 25) to remember those who have lost their lives in the shootings in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Army and police are accused of having opened fire on demonstrators in Lagos who had been protesting against a history of police brutality and in particular the Special Anti-Robbery Squad who have become viewed as working in support of a government for whom their is growing dislike.

Amnesty International has said ‘at least 12 people were killed by soldiers and police’.

To raise the profile of the atrocities and remember those who have been killed, Portsmouth’s Black Lives Matter movement will be hosting a remembrance ceremony at Guildhall Square. The event will take place between 6pm and 7pm.

Anyone wishing to attend is reminded to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing.
