Cult musical returns to cinema

The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be screened at No 6 cinema, in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard on Saturday – and cinema-goers are being urged to dress up for the occasion.

Volunteer Malisa Sledmere, who is part of the team that founded the cinema, at the Boathouse 6 building inside the dockyard, said: ‘We really want to make this an event. It’s going to be a fantastic night.’

The story follows the tale sweethearts Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), stuck with a flat tyre during a storm.

Seeking shelter, the pair discover the bizarre mansion of Dr Frank-N-Furter, played by Tim Curry, a transvestite scientist. From there, they meet a range of wild and eccentric characters, from a creepy butler to a rocking biker, played by American singer Meatloaf.

Through surreal dances and songs, Frank-N-Furter eventually unveils his latest creation: Rocky.

‘The film is completely bonkers,’ added Malisa. ‘You can see why it’s become a cult classic. It’s just so out there.’

The screening is the first of several musicals set to grace the 250-seat venue in the coming months.

It comes off the back of mainstream musical success stories like the critically-acclaimed La La Land.

‘We’ve already had West Side Story. That was really popular. It was a really well-loved musical. It’s important to put on some of the things that are not quite so famous but have been influential.

‘We would quite like to show some French films like The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.’

As well as this, the cinema is also set to screen the 1965 classic, The Sound of Music, staring Julie Andrews, over Christmas.
