Ms Braverman’s short stint as home secretary previously saw her come under fire when she blamed the disruption by Just Stop Oil on the ‘tofu-eating wokerati’.

‘It's the Labour party, it's the Lib Dems, it's the coalition of chaos, it’s the Guardian-reading tofu-eating wokerati - dare I say, the anti-growth coalition - that we have to thank for the disruption we are seeing on our roads today,’ she said.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt, the two-time Tory leadership contender, will remain as Leader of the House of Commons.

She was also re-appointed as Lord President of the Council.

But the Sun newspaper reported she ‘left with a face like thunder’ after being told the news with there ‘some fireworks’.

In a tweet announcing she had not made the ballot to run as prime minister, Mordaunt said: ‘These are unprecedented times. Despite the compressed timetable for the leadership contest it is clear that colleagues feel we need certainty today.

‘They have taken this decision in good faith for the good of the country. Members should know that this proposition has been fairly and thoroughly tested by the agreed 1922 [Committee] process.’
