Legion of volunteers put on big Queen celebration day

Two charities in Gosport teamed up to arrange a big community party celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday.

The special event was hosted and organised by Gosport Voluntary Action and Square Pegs Charity in the Jervis Gallery at St Vincent College.

More than 100 guests enjoyed comedy and songs from Doorstep Entertainment listened to a range of vinyl 78s courtesy of Keith Hayward from Musical Memories and a fantastic buffet supplied by the Real Junk Food Project.

A range of craft stalls offered gifts and goodies for sale, and a raffle with some 35 donated prizes ended the day.

Toni Young, who attended with seven members of the Brendoncare Monday Club, said: ‘The food was lovely and the entertainment was fantastic.

‘Thank you to the organisers for such a wonderful event.’

Guests were provided with plenty of tea throughout the day by the legion of volunteers that helped to make the day a success.

These including Royal Military Police recruits, volunteers from Loud & Proud, Give Gain and Grow, the school nursing team and many others.

The Mayor of Gosport Cllr Keith Farr attended the event and spent time talking with guests and even enjoyed a dance with the Lady Mayoress.

Simon Bedford-Smith of Give, Gain and Grow, said: “A fun-filled, jam-packed, pedal-powered, crazy happy fun day.

‘A massive thank you to everybody that has played a part in my exhausting but brilliant day.’

Gosport Voluntary Action and Square Pegs would like to thank all of the volunteers that played a crucial role in this event and to all those generous people and businesses that donated raffle prizes.

A total of £400 was raised, which will be divided between the two charities.

Gosport Voluntary Action aims to improve the quality of life for residents, in particular older people and people with disabilities. Square Pegs Charity promotes creativity and well being in the community with membership to craft and holistic- based workshops, clubs and social groups.
