Portsmouth region shows its pride for the Queen as residents throw 90th birthday street parties

Patriotic residents in the Portsmouth area threw street parties with a touch of British tradition to mark Her Majesty’s big occasion.

There was plenty of fun to be had in Fratton as 150 neighbours gathered in the green between King Albert and Wimpole courts and enjoyed family activities.

Visitors were treated to a bouncy castle, free barbecue, drinks and a DJ provided entertainment.

Chantelle Ash, 30, who organised the occasion with her sister, Lisa, 39, said: ‘It was for the community and 100 per cent a success. We did something for the Jubilee and thought it would be great to do something again.

‘We lost our nan in January, and she loved the Royal family.

‘So this seemed to be extra special, we felt we had to do it. It was lovely because we had people from all over the community come along.

‘It was nice to cater for everybody.’

In Emsworth, celebrations were in full swing as close to 200 people gathered in the methodist church hall.

A punch and judy show and afternoon tea was laid on for guests and those aged 90 and above got in free. And a ukulele musician played to visitors.

Proceeds were donated to homeless charity Stonepillow.

Alistair Gibson, of Emsworth Business Association, which organised the occasion with The Wednesday Group, said: ‘It’s been lovely. It was a shame about the weather, but this is England and you just have to put up with it.

‘The atmosphere was lovely and people have really enjoyed it.

‘People really enjoyed the old fashioned feel to it.

‘In Emsworth, there’s a real sense of community.’

Families also came together in Greenaway Lane, Warsash.

Children’s games were laid on as well as food and drink and a fun quiz for the adults.

Organiser Eileen Hawkins said: ‘We all respect the Queen, and think she is quite something for the age she is, and does a lot.

‘It was a great excuse for a good get together and get to meet everyone.

‘It was a great success.’

Residents Mat Walker and Anne Moore put on a fun-filled party in Vernon Road, Gosport, for around 150 guests.

Highlights included performances from Gosport Big Noise Samba Band. Firefighters and police also came to show their support.

Matthew said: ‘It was all about bringing the community together, and it worked.’
