Printmaker joins Making Spaces' craft community

The Havant-based organisation is the only Hampshire County Council funded visual arts organisation and is the lead craft organisation in the county. The charity works with local artists and arts organisations and contributes to the national craft community.

Making Space organises courses, masterclasses and projects for both children and adults at their purpose-built Leigh Park studios.

Lynne Dick, director at Making Space, said: ‘We are a craft organisation with seven studios for creators and courtyard space where we run workshops for the community.

‘I’m really excited to have Mary here as a tenant and to see her pass on her traditional skills.

‘In this digital age I think learning about hand printing is a beautiful thing. There is a magic in working into a plate and then seeing your work appear. There’s a surprise that comes with it.’

Ms Dalton studied as a printmaker at the Royal College of Art, London, and has seen her work displayed by the Royal Academy, the British Library and several museums.

She said: ‘I’m the new artist at Making Space and want to get more involved in the community in Havant and Leigh Park and as a master printmaker I love teaching so this seems like the perfect opportunity.

Ms Dalton is just one of the artists who use Making Space for teaching and crafting. All the artists who use the studios are able to teach workshops, which include painting, photography and glass work, to the public.

The charity also works with partners such as schools, children’s centres, family learning environments and retirement homes though its community outreach programme in order to enthuse and engage new audiences.
