Re-homed seahorses have given birth

The seahorses were part of a collection of marine creatures from the Fort Victoria Marine Aquarium, on the Isle of Wight, which was forced to close down in November after more than 30 years.

Despite only having been in their new home for just over two months, the new arrivals began giving birth earlier this week, with hundreds more tiny fry due to be born over the next few days.

Blue Reef Aquarium’s Martyn Chandler said: ‘It was quite a logistical challenge to ensure these seahorses were able to make the trip across the water from the Isle of Wight.

‘We are ecstatic they 
have already started breeding.

‘It shows conditions within their new display are perfect for them and they are comfortable in their surroundings.’

Martyn will be using special pipettes to handfeed the tiny babies 
on artemia, a type of microscopic brine shrimp.

This process will continue for several months until they can manage bigger bits of food.
