In his role as chair of the Tourism Board for the Local Government Association (LGA), Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson suggested cities, potentially including Portsmouth, should levy a hotel surcharge to generate money to reinvest in the tourist industry. Cllr Vernon-Jackson cited dwindling council budgets and successful taxation schemes in the USA and mainland Europe. Here’s a flavour of what people had to say.
