Sands charity offers support after baby found dead near Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum in Portsmouth

Police are investigating the death of a recently born baby found at the junction for Victoria Street and Old Commercial Road this morning.

Officers were called at 6.18am today and have been carrying out enquiries in the area.

But police admitted they have concerns for the mum.

Detective chief inspector Simon Baker said: ‘We are extremely concerned for the welfare of the mother of this child.

‘I am making a direct appeal to her to get in touch with us. I know this must be a very distressing time for you, but I want to make sure you are getting the right help and care.

‘I understand you may be frightened, but it is important that you get in touch with us.’

Sands is a national charity which supports parents and families who have suffered the death of a baby.

Emma Hayward, co-chair of the Portsmouth and Chichester committee, said: ‘The loss of a baby can affect the whole family and can be a very lonely time.

‘Anyone who is affected by the loss of a baby is welcome to approach us for any support. Our hearts go out to the family.’
