Thousands of bees coat car at Portsmouth hospital

Thousands of the insects coated the Ford Fiesta in the car park of the hospital in Cosham.

A beekeeper worked on site to move them away.

One onlooker said: ‘I’ve never seen anything like it. There was thousands of them just covering the car.’

John Phillips, of Hampshire beekeepers, said: ‘Bees swarm at this time of year and it is possible the queen had been attracted to something in the car - perhaps a sweet or food in the car.’

In a statement on its Facebook page, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust said: ‘The East grounds of Queen Alexandra Hospital were greeted by thousands of bees this afternoon – before specialist bee keepers came to the rescue and detained them.

#Alerted to them just after 1pm today by a member of the public, QA’s security team cornered off the area and directed people away from the East entrance before the bee keepers arrived.

‘The bees have now been removed from hospital grounds.’
