Cats Protection’s Gosport Town Branch is currently unable to take in abandoned cats but the group - which started in 1982 - continues to be a vital part of the cat-loving community.

Now with capacity for between 15 and 20 cats and kittens, the branch has become a focal point for cat-related information, and volunteers have been working towards when they can begin rehoming.

With summer fundraising events on hold, the group has been creative about continuing its activities, finding new ways to communicate and continue raising funds.

Kate Stapleford, branch coordinator, said: ‘When lockdown first came into force we weren’t sure how we could continue as a branch but I can’t praise my fellow branch members highly enough for how quickly they adapted to the new way of volunteering.

‘Whether it's making catnip mice to entertain foster cats and sell to generate funds, updating our social media channels to keep our supporters up-to-date or fostering cats, each activity has continued throughout lockdown and is greatly appreciated.’

She said: ‘Naturally I've got a passion for cats and one of the nicest things about getting involved with Cats Protection is gaining knowledge, always learning and understanding cats.

‘Socially it's great to meet like-minded people who love cats and you know you're never going to be short of something to talk about.’

Branch secretary Barbara Davis said: ‘We’ve had to work differently in this period but there are still cats to care for and supplies to coordinate but now it’s delivered straight from the shops.

‘It’s like being part of a family and we all share in each other’s news, good or bad, and most importantly work together in different roles to help rehome the cats and kittens in our area.’

Prior to the pandemic, branch members had had a difficult year with bereavements and illnesses but the group supported each other throughout.

Kate added: ‘I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who volunteers for Gosport Town Branch as we achieve so much together to improve the lives of cats.’
