Pictures celebrate a right '˜royal' life in Portsmouth

I was delighted to see the 97-and-a-half-year-old (the halves are vitally important when you reach such a grand age) when she called into Lakeside last week with all of the photos here today.

Born a month after the end of the First World War in Boulton Road, Southsea, Violet (née Slevin) went to St Swithun’s School in Waverley Road and you can see her circled in the picture on the right taken in 1930.

For much of her life she lived at 63 Boulton Road and she remembers clearly two of the events pictured on these pages.

The first was the Silver Jubilee celebration and street party in that road for King George V.

The second, two years later, was the street party marking the coronation of King George VI.

In 1947 Violet and her family moved to Elkstone Road, Paulsgrove, and it was in nearby Leominster Road that parties were held in 1953 celebrating the Queen’s coronation.
