Cabinet set to make decision on new body

COUNCILLORS will decide today on whether they will join a new transport body that has been set up to bring transport improvements to the area.

Hampshire County Council’s cabinet are to meet at the local authority’s headquarters in Winchester where a decision will be made on whether it joins the proposed shadow Sub National Transport body for the south east (TfSE).

The TfSE is set to be a new body that will help oversee improvements to rail and road infrastructure across the region.

Councils in Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex, Kent, Brighton and Medway are looking to form the body along with the Hampshire authority.

Its creation would give the authorities further legal powers and duties to advise transport ministers on key decisions affecting transport in the area.

Councillor Rob Humby, the executive member for transport on the county council previously said: ‘TfSE will focus attention on the need for road and rail investment in this part of the country.

The cabinet has been recommended by council officers to join the group which would see it spend £20,000 to help initially set it up.

The meeting starts at 10.30am this morning.
