Council leads way in self-build housing says national group

A COUNCIL is leading the way in self-build homes according to a national association.

Fareham Borough Council hosted other local councils and businesses at the first Right to Build Expo to learn how they can support more people to deliver the dream of building their own home.

Speaking at the Expo council leader Councillor Sean Woodward said: '˜Today is a fantastic day, as Fareham Borough Council has formally adopted its Custom and Self Build Action Plan, putting Fareham in the lead locally in terms of working to create more opportunities for people to have a hand in designing and building their own home.'

To make the route easier for people, the National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA) and the Right to Build Task Force are investigating a range of approaches to make the dream of building available to a far greater range of people.

Chair of NaCSBA Michael Holmes said: '˜NaCSBA are working to double the number of self-build houses being created in the UK by 2020, and a big part of that work is looking at different models that make it more affordable, and easier to do.

'˜So it's great to see a council like Fareham leading the way and really working to develop new ways to deliver housing.'

The first step for anyone interested in building their own home needs to sign up to their local authority Right to Build register visit RightToBuildPortal.org to sign up.
