Exhibition to be held on First World War battle

Three guns that saw action at the Battle of Jutland will feature in a major new exhibition at The National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth.

The exhibition, called 36 Hours: Jutland 1916, The Battle That Won The War, will be the most comprehensive ever staged on the subject and will open on May 12 to commemorate the centenary.

The large gun from German destroyer B98 will be on display, alongside two smaller deck guns from HMS Opal and HMS Narbourgh, usually on display in the Orkney Islands.

Personal effects from men and women involved in the battle will be on show, including the diary of Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval nurse Mary Clarke, photos of HMS Shark survivors and

Head of heritage development at the NMRN, Nick Hewitt, said: ‘The Battle of Jutland is the navy’s defining moment in The Great War, and perhaps the largest sea battle in history. It’s the only event in the national First World War centenary programme wholly naval in character.

‘We’ve pulled out all the stops to put together a blockbuster exhibition that captures this epic, tragic story and ensures that it will never be forgotten.’

Tickets are £10 for adults, and £8 for groups.
