Fareham council leader blasts David Cameron for '˜sick' use of Jo Cox's death in EU campaign

In an article for the Sunday Telegraph, the Prime Minister begins by paying tribute to ‘brilliant young MP’ Mrs Cox, who was killed in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

But after describing how the UK will miss her, the PM turns the subject to the impending EU referendum vote.

He wrote: ‘It is not easy, in the wake of Jo’s murder, to turn to the question of Thursday’s referendum. But we must.

‘For, as Jo had been pointing out so effectively over these past few months, our country now stands at a crossroads.’

He says Mrs Cox backed the Remain campaign to stay in the EU, which the PM also supports, and then details why he believes British people must vote to stay in.

But Fareham Borough Council leader Cllr Sean Woodward, who is a Leave supporter, branded the prime minister’s comments ‘disgraceful’.

‘It’s awful. The prime minister is trying to take advantage of this,’ Cllr Woodward told The News.

‘I think it’s sickening. For anyone to use the terrible killing for  political purposes is disgraceful.’
