Councillor Lynne Stagg, Portsmouth City Council's traffic and transportation boss, said: 'Resurfacing roads, when it is safe to do so, is important to make sure our streets are kept in a good condition.

'The next road on the resurfacing programme is Festing Grove and work will start from Wednesday, July 13 with a third of the road being closed a time, over a period of about 10 days.'

However, one ward councillor has expressed concerns due to the fact it clashes with closures along parts of nearby Eastney Esplanade and Clarence Esplanade that were put in place to encourage social distancing.

Cllr Luke Stubbs said: 'The road is in poor condition and has needed resurfacing for a long time.

'But I do question the timing with all the parking problems that have been caused by the closures along the seafront. Where is everyone supposed to go to park while the work is being carried out?

'I worry about the effect on parking.'

Cllr Stagg added: 'During this short period of time people are asked to find an alternative place to park, such as a neighbouring road, so the work can be carried out quickly.'

The roadworks will take place between 7.30am and 5pm and are expected to finish on July 23.
