Barratt Homes wants to build 195 homes off Sinah Lane, Hayling Island, including 58 cheaper homes.

The developer appealed to the Planning Inspectorate complaining Havant Borough Council had not made a decision on the previous 2018 plans fast enough.

But now, following a non-binding vote by councillors last month saying they would approve the plans if they could, the developer has resubmitted plans.

This means councillors do now have the powers to approve or reject the plans for the two to four-bedroom homes. The appeal is also still running.

Hayling West ward councillor Clare Satchwell said: ‘For me the biggest issue is transport.

‘I still have a lot of outstanding concerns about the transport assessment. I still don’t believe it’s sustainable to build something of that size on Hayling because of the transport issues.’

Cllr Satchwell said a ‘holistic’ approach should be taken looking at development on the island when its local plan - setting out what areas could be built on - has been approved.

Included in the plans is a bid to change agricultural land on the plot to become a Wader and Brent geese refuge.

Analysis done for the developer shows a net drop of 167kg a year in nitrates being pumped into the environment.

Nitrate pollution has previously held up building of homes in the Solent area but mitigation measures, including rewilding, are easing the lockjam.

But there remains opposition to the plans from people living nearby. Objections have started to flood in on the online planning portal.

One unnamed person said: ‘I object to 195 new dwellings being built on this site or anywhere on Hayling Island.

‘Our one road off the island is known to be over capacity therefore although the charts supporting this application show the percentage increase of traffic on road junctions as being “modest”, any increase is not acceptable.’

The News contacted Barratt Homes for comment following its new bid for the homes on Hayling.
