Handyman car park could help solve Portsmouth traffic chaos, councillor says

Creating specific areas in Portsmouth to store commercial vehicles could be a way to solve the city's traffic crisis, a local councillor has said.

Councillor Stuart Potter, who is chair of the city council’s traffic, environment and community safety scrutiny panel, said

major changes need to be made to reduce the amount of vehicles on the city’s streets.

He said: ‘This city is overloaded with cars. On average we have about three cars per household and this city was never designed for that.’

He added that one option could be to keep commercial vehicles in one place, and transport workers between their homes and the area.

The council is planning to hold focus groups with residents over the next few months to help gather ideas.

The panel will be meeting on Thursday at the civic offices, starting at 5.30pm.

The meeting will be open to the public but the deadline for people to submit a request to speak has now passed.
