The Conservatives have lost control of Havant Borough Council, with group leader Alex Rennie losing his seat and being beaten by Reform UK in a bitter blow for the party.

The Tories’ presence on the borough council has now halved, being left with just 13 seats compared to 30 after the last election. Boundary changes mean people headed to the polls on Thursday for an all-out election to elect three candidates from 12 wards, the new total of 36 seats is two fewer than before.

But support for the Tories has crumbled, mirroring the picture across the country where they’ve lost at least 420 councillors. In the Leigh Park Central and West Leigh ward, Tory council leader Alex Rennie has lost his seat – with Reform UK’s Sharon Collings, and Munazza Faiz and Jason Horton from the Labour Party being elected.

Reform UK has also seen Victoria Rhodes elected in Leigh Park Hermitage. Councillor Lulu Bowerman, cabinet lead for commercial, has also lost her seat as the Greens talk all three councillors in Emsworth, with no party left with a majority.

After the last election in 2023, the council was made up of 30 Conservatives, four Labour, two Lib Dems, one Green and one Independent.

It is now made up of 13 Conservatives, 10 Labour, seven Lib Dems, four Greens and two Reform UK. With no overall control, a party can either form a minority administration or a coalition.

Mr Rennie said that the national picture “plays a big part in the result”. However, he refused to “play the blame game on who caused what” when asking about Rishi Sunak and the consequences of his policies and decision to local Conservative councils.

He said: “It is a reflection of the fact that local and national politics are changing but I think it is a clear line where Reform stood candidates we struggled, I lost the seat by 10 votes.”

“Despite the loss, the party take a clear picture and message from residents when knocking on doors expressing their intention to vote for Reform because they were ‘pi**ed off of what is happening nationally’.

“That’s essentially a picture we painted knocking at the doors. People were saying, ‘Alex you did a good job, we like you, but we actually want Reform to kick in for the national government’.”
