Maintenance work at Hard Interchange in Portsmouth to start next week

Contractors for Portsmouth City Council are due to work on the roof of the Hard Interchange and conduct some minor cabling improvements adjacent to its taxi welfare facilities from October 12.

But buses will still run as normal as the majority of the work, which is expected to take around two weeks, will take place between 11.30pm and 5am.

Councillor Lynne Stagg, the council's traffic and transport boss, said: 'We're carrying out this work to ensure that we keep the Interchange well maintained for over nine million passengers who travel through the transport hub every year.

'We're sorry if this causes any inconvenience to local residents and businesses and are grateful for everyone's patience and understanding.'

It comes as The News has reported twice this year that works to fix tarmac have been carried out at The Hard due to problems with its surface sinking.

However, the council has confirmed these works are not linked to issues with the surfacing.

Conversations are still currently ongoing between the council with contractor Osborne and designer RoC Consulting over the state of the Hard's surface.

The maintenance work will take place between Monday, October 12 and 26. Measures are being taken to ensure that any noise is kept to a minimum.

The Hard Interchange opened in 2017 at a cost of £9.2m.
