MP hails Havant as a leader of digital revolution

Havant MP Alan Mak became the first politician to lead a commons debate on the fourth industrial revolution.

The revolution, known as 4IR, highlights advances in artificial intelligence and internet connectivity. Mr Mak says that Havant could be a hub for new business and jobs in the sector.

He said: ‘The Havant area is already home to great technology and engineering businesses, whilst new local start-ups like Dream 3D show entrepreneurs are giving our area a vote of confidence when it comes to new jobs.’

Mr Mak said that the government ‘has a key role to play’ in addressing 4IR through educational reforms and investments in digital infastructure.

‘We must act now to ensure that Britain’s political and economic structures are fit for purpose so we lead the world when it comes to the fourth industrial revolution,’ he added.

James Preen, founder of 3D printing retailer Dream 3D, a specialist 3D printing retailer, has seen substantial growth in the business since 2013 with increasing demand not only for 3D printers in homes, but also for jobs in the industry.

He said: ‘We’ve always found it relatively easy to recruit new staff. It’s a growing industry, so people want to get their feet on the ground early. It’s a good industry to get into because it opens your mind with software.’

Mr Mak also tipped larger business in Havant such as defence contractor Lockheed Martin UK as 4IR frontrunners.

Vice president and group managing director Bob Kramer says that 4IR is ‘changing the rules of business’.

He said: ‘4IR is creating a new dynamic, it’s bringing about new and exciting opportunities, driving efficiencies through technology and is right at the centre of new product and service development.’

With efficient proximity to the A27 and A3, Havant’s industrial sector is drawing more attention and trade as an alternative to London.

Councillor David Guest, cabinet lead for economy, planning, development and prosperity said: ‘Businesses choose Havant because of its attractive connectivity, with two motorways connecting us to airports and ferry ports.

‘It has become a fantastic place to live, work and play.’
