‘We have some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world and it is absolutely right that we continue to strengthen the UK’s status as a global leader.’

Last year the environment secretary launched a consultation for the plans and out of almost 4,000 respondents, more than 99 per cent were supportive of the plans.

The legislation will come into effect from May 2018, once it passes through parliament.
