Councillor Suzy Horton, Portsmouth City Council's education boss, said: 'At this worrying time we wanted to offer a safe alternative to our usual events, where both staff and public safety were front of mind.

'This innovative virtual event allows attendees to still meet our team face-to-face over video and ask all the important questions they may have - we hope it will be a huge success that we can carry forward in months to come.'

There are currently 470 looked-after children in Portsmouth, many living with foster carers on a short or long term basis.

The council is keen to recruit more foster carers, with a particular need for long-term foster carers, as well as those able to accommodate sibling groups, unaccompanied asylum seeking children and teenagers.

'We have many children and young people in need of a loving home at the moment, so if you think becoming a foster carer could work for you please register for our virtual event to find out more,' Cllr Horton said.

A council spokeswoman added: 'The council welcomes all applications, and while a spare room is crucial, it doesn't matter whether you rent or own your own home.

'Our foster carers come from all walks of life and regardless of their age, ethnicity or sexuality, they all share the same commitment and motivation to make a positive difference to a child's life.'

For more information on fostering in general contact the council's fostering recruitment team on 023 9283 4071, visit foster.portsmouth.gov.uk or email [email protected].

The virtual event will be held over Zoom on Wednesday, May 20 between from 7pm to 8pm. To register for the event visit foster.portsmouth.gov.uk/virtual-event.
