Portsmouth International Port to help residents go green at Earth Hour event with Extinction Rebellion

PORTSMOUTH International Port is to help residents cut their carbon footprint with a day long event to mark Earth Hour later this month.

WWF’s Earth Hour, where the landmarks and building around the globe switch off their lights at 8:30pm as a call for action to the climate crisis, is being held on Saturday March 28.

The port will mark the event with an 'All Electric Day', dedicated to helping residents reduce their carbon footprint.

Companies including Snows BMW, Pure Green Energy, VWT, Portsmouth Cycle World and Andy Sills Motorcycles will be on hand to offer advice , alongside activists from Portsmouth Climate Action Board and Extinction Rebellion.

The lights in the terminal will be switched off at 8.30pm for an hour to join the global call to action.

Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Leader of Portsmouth City Council said: ‘We are facing a climate emergency and as a city we have to take responsibility and take direct action to combat this critical issue.

‘The port is the UK’s most successful municipal port and we now want to become one of the first zero emission ports. Events like this one allow the public to discover how they can also reduce their impact on the environment, alongside saving money in the long run.’

Earth Hour was took place in first launch in 2007, with more than 180 countries taking part last year.
