Portsmouth MP backs campaign to tackle loneliness

The Portsmouth South MP has backed the Jo Cox Commission as it makes a call to action to tackle loneliness across British society by getting people to talk.

The message, Start A Conversation, wants people to start chatting at all levels, whether that is to neighbours, visiting an old friend or just making time for the people they meet.

The commission, which is named after the murdered MP Jo Cox, will also target businesses and employer organisations and look at what action local and national government can take to combat loneliness.

Mrs Drummond said: ‘Jo Cox was a wonderful woman and always ready to speak to colleagues, so it is very fitting this campaign to end loneliness by reaching out to one another bears her name.

‘Loneliness can affect anyone at any time of life, but the loss of friends, dislocation of families and illness mean that older people can be particularly susceptible.

‘The message from the commission is if we talk to one another more, we can shine a little light into each other’s lives and I hope people in Portsmouth will think about someone they can reach out to and help with loneliness.’
