Portsmouth port faces Brexit challenge as business returns to normal

Since January 1, Operation Transmission has been in place in Portsmouth, stopping lorry drivers at a triage point in Tipner to ensure they have the correct paperwork now that the Brexit transition period has ended.

Today, business returns to its normal operating capacity and the port is expected to be much busier.

Representatives from the Hampshire Local Resilience Forum (LRF) are optimistic that disruption will be kept to a minimum, but have admitted the ‘possibility’ of a tailback from Portsmouth International Port.

Deputy leader for Hampshire County Council, Cllr Rob Humby, said: ‘We’ve been working closely with our partners in the LRF on a robust plan to keep traffic moving on the road network and therefore reduce the risk of traffic delays and congestion.

‘I would like to reassure residents that we are working together to do everything possible to keep traffic flowing and ensure access to supplies and services can continue.’
