Sam Poole: Whatever your views, make sure you vote

Today is your final opportunity to register to vote on whether Britain will remain in or leave the European Union.

It’s a referendum which could have a huge impact on our futures and it may be the most important vote we cast in our lifetimes.

We have been bombarded with rhetoric from politicians and celebrities trying to convince us to vote one way or the other.

Those who are highly respected have risked crippling their reputation because of their views.

And the campaigning will now step up a gear. But will that help us decide or just make matters even more confusing?

The prime minister has been accused of scaremongering, others have been alleged to have lied, and political parties are split.

The lead-up to the referendum has been messy and I’m confident it’ll become even more controversial.

As young people we have been alienated on numerous occasions; people don’t think we have the understanding and passion to vote.

Wrong.

Yes, we are young and don’t have as much life experience as others, but we still have a right to cast a vote on something which will affect us.

If you don’t participate in this huge opportunity then I think you are missing out.

Get yourself registered to vote otherwise it could be something you will regret in years to come.

Imagine if the difference between the overall outcome was so slim your vote could be the decider.

Of course that is highly unlikely, although it is important to acknowledge every vote counts.

If you are keen to remain then vote stay. If you think we should leave then vote to get out.

Let’s not sit around and predict it will go one way or the other when we haven’t voted ourselves. Take time to think about your decision before voting.

There are people on this earth who don’t have the right to vote.

Others desire to participate in areas which affect them but can do nothing about it.

We live in a world where people can’t speak for themselves. Therefore, it is important to understand we are very privileged compared to others in that we are allowed to have our say.

Your vote is unique to you so don’t waste it. If you haven’t registered to vote be sure to do it today.

Get motivated to get involved, do some reading and make a difference.
